Vocabulary Review Activity-Amel Dabbah One vocabulary activity review that I always use in my 3rd grade classes throughout the year is picture flashcards. In the beginning of the year, I start with a collection of cognates. I show the pictures to my students and elicit the vocabulary from them. I use it to encourage them and prove to them that we all have some knowledge of English. Every time I teach a new item/word, I add it to the picture flashcards. I also add the letters that I teach ( both capital and lower case) and numbers. At the beginning or the end of each lesson, I take out the picture flashcards and review the vocabulary. I also ask questions such as: What color is it? What letter does it begin with? What is the opposite of it?.... I also work on chunks. For example; blue bag- They say blue bag and then I point to another bag in class and they say for example-black bag. The students enjoy reviewing the vocabulary and always look at the stack of flashcards I bring with me. In my opinion, I think it works wonderfully. Why?
It caters to both the visual learners (picture flashcards) and to the auditory learners.
They are exposed to the vocabulary on a regular basis-(recycling), which helps with memorizations.
